MQ Uninstalling Midi Quest

The following instructions are provided for removing Midi Quest from your hard drive for any reason including upgrading to a new or different version of Midi Quest. In the instructions below there will be references to "Midi Quest" folders. On your hard drive, the name will vary based on the version of Midi Quest that is installed: Midi Quest, Midi Quest Pro, or Midi Quest Essentials.

Windows Uninstall

Midi Quest can be uninstalled using two methods.

Method 1

Click the Start button
Click All Programs to display all programs
Navigate to the Sound Quest folder and click on it
Navigate to the Midi Quest sub folder and click on it
Select the option Uninstall Midi Quest and follow the prompts

Method 2

Click the Start button
Select Control Panel to open it
Choose the panel application for managing programs (name will vary depending on the version of Windows)
Select the option to uninstall Midi Quest

Both methods above do not remove SysEx files or instrument files. SysEx files can be found in your user documents folder under Sound Quest and Midi Quest. If you choose to delete instrument files (detailed below) then any file with an .SQ9 or .SQW extension in the Midi Quest folder should also be deleted.

Instrument modules and a number of other program related files are stored in the user area. (Note: the instructions below are for Windows 7, 8 & 10. The location for Windows XP and Vista will be different)

Open File Explorer and select the C: drive
Open the Users folder
Find your user name and open it
Open the AppData folder (if this folder is not visible you will need to reconfigure Windows to display hidden folders)
Open the Roaming folder
Open the Sound Quest folder
Delete the MidiQuest folder and all of its subfolders

Midi Quest makes one set of entries in the Windows registry if you wish to delete them. Open the registry with RegEdit.exe and go to

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Sound Quest

in the registry. Select either "Sound Quest" or "Sound Quest/Midi Quest" in the left column and press the delete key on the computer keyboard. Confirm deletion of the entries to delete them.

Midi Quest data files are stored in "<Documents>\Sound Quest\MidiQuest" if you wish to delete them as well. If the instrument modules have been deleted then, at minimum, any file ending in .SQ9 should also be deleted.

For Midi Quest Pro, to remove plug-ins
Go to your VSTplug-ins directory(s)
Delete any Midi Quest VST2 plug-ins found in the directory(s)
Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
Delete any Midi Quest VST3 plug-ins found in the directory
Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins directory
Delete the folder "MidiQuestAAX.aaxplugin" if found in the directory

Macintosh Uninstall

Macintosh does not have a standardized application removal system so the following actions must be taken.

Note: at times, the Macintosh installer appears to fail to update the master plug-ins which are used to create Midi Quest's instrument specific VST2, VST3, and AU plug-ins. If you are having issues with plug-ins crashing, it is important that you remove all plug-ins, both the masters and the generated plug-ins before re-installing and re-creating plug-ins.

(Note: depending on your version of OSX, Apple may have chosen to hide the Library folders. Instructions for displaying the Library folder appropriate to your OS version can be found on the internet.)
