The Studio Window

The Studio Window is the main control center for obtaining SysEx from your instruments. It can load and direct instrument SysEx into the various storage and editing windows: Editor, Bank, Set, Collection, Library, and SysEx. The Studio Window can also receive and save SysEx directly to disk.

Instrument Configuration. The Studio window is used to perform the basic setup so Midi Quest has the information it needs to be able to communicate with each MIDI device. To configure a device, select it in the Studio window and press the Settings button on the icon bar. This will open the Settings dialog where Midi Quest is configured to use the correct MIDI ports and channels. Alternately, the AutoSense option can be used to have Midi Quest attempt to auto configure itself. Make sure you read the Fast Tips for the MIDI Device to ensure that it is configured correctly to ensure that Midi Quest can communicate with it. Many instruments are shipped with SysEx disabled and the settings on the instrument must be changed manually in order for Midi Quest to work with them.

Open Files. Loading SysEx from disk is also easiest from this window because of the additional information it can provide. Choosing the desired component from the set-list and then clicking on the Open mini-button will launch a file selector dialog which looks into the correct instrument directory.

Get SysEx The Studio window is typically where SysEx is loaded from an instrument. Select the Set or individual type of SysEx to load (Midi Quest Essentials and Midi Quest one can only load into a Set) and click the Get mini-button to load SysEx from the instrument into a new Midi Quest editor window.

Create New Files. The Studio window is used to create new SysEx files which can later be loaded with SysEx. Use the Set selector to choose a Set or individual SysEx to load and click the New mini-button to create the appropriate editor window.

The Studio Window opens automatically when the program starts and the last Studio file used is reopened.

Midi Quest Essentials and Midi Quest one are only capable of creating Sets and cannot create individual Bank Editors, Parameter Editors, Collections or Libraries. Any references to the creation of these items should be ignored. In addition, Midi Quest Essentials is limited to loading 3 instruments and Midi Quest one is limited to a single instrument.

The current settings in the Studio window are automatically saved when Midi Quest is closed and after most editing operations. At the same time, a text file with the same file name and .txt extension is created (eg. MQ13.txt). This file contains a text version of the major settings in the Studio window and can be loaded into any text editor to be printed or manipulated.

Studio Menu

The Studio contains a wide range of menu functions to organize the Patches and other SysEx used by your various instruments. These functions are all contained in the Studio menu. The Studio Window must be activated before you can see and access the Studio menu.
