Importing Unisyn .UBK Files (Studio Window)

Midi Quest Pro is capable of importing over 280 different types of SysEx from Unisyn .UBK bank files.

This covers most of the SysEx from instruments supported by both Unisyn and Midi Quest.

Importing is extremely easy. Ensure that Midi Quest has the appropriate instrument modules installed in the Studio window. Choose File / Open from the menus and select the .UBK file to import. The file selector in the Windows version of Midi Quest includes a .UBK filter which can be selected to show only files of that type to display. Windows and Mac Cocoa versions also support drag and drop so a Unisyn .UBK file can simply be dropped onto the Studio window to be imported.

Midi Quest will open and analyze the file and convert any information that it recognizes into Midi Quest SysEx. Converted SysEx is placed in a new Midi Quest Set. From there the SysEx can be moved where ever it is required. Any SysEx in the Unisyn file which Midi Quest does not recognize is ignored. If SysEx data is found that Midi Quest recognizes but the required instrument module is not installed, Midi Quest we display a notification message indicating which module is required.

To be imported, Unisyn bank files must use the extension ".UBK" or Midi Quest will ignore them.

Midi Quest Pro is only capable of importing SysEx stored in Unisyn's bank format. SysEx in Unisyn Performance files will need to be copied into a Bank before it can be imported.

The Unisyn file format does not provide a 1:1 correlation between the SysEx data and the instrument that it came from. For example, the data from a D-10 Tone Bank is indistinguishable from a D-110 Tone Bank (and there are many other examples). In these cases, Midi Quest will only import that data into a specific data type. If you have a D-110 module installed in Midi Quest, attempting to import D-110 Tone data will fail as Midi Quest will attempt to use the D-10 module. To solve the conflict, simply install Midi Quest's D-10 module, import the bank and copy and paste the D-10 Tone bank's contents into a D-110 Tone Bank. Midi Quest will indicate which instrument module is required if it recognizes the data and the appropriate module is not installed.

Sound Quest used a Windows copy of Unisyn 1.20 to create the import functions. It is possible that files created by alternate versions of Unisyn will not import correctly. If you have .UBK files which Midi Quest attempts to import but are not imported correctly, please supply a sample to Sound Quest and we will attempt to update the Midi Quest code to handle the alternate file format.
